For six of those years, he was his party's Defence Spokesman, and he sat on the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee. He also served on the Transport Select Committee and the committees on Standards and Privileges.
His work on Ukraine saw him serve as Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Ukraine, and he was awarded a Ukrainian state honour by President Zelensky in 2019 for his sustained advocacy. He was named Best Scot at Westminster at both the Holyrood Magazine and The Herald political awards in 2022.

Since leaving Parliament, Stewart has founded Regent Park Strategies, and has advised a number of clients in a variety of sectors, including defence, technology, energy, and the diplomatic community. He serves as Senior Adviser on Defence and Security at the Dublin-based public affairs firm Fenton Fitzwilliam, where he is part of a pan-European network of people with political, diplomatic, military, and security expertise who advise clients across the continent. In 2026, he co-founded the Scottish Security Dialogue, a cross-party forum on defence and security delivered in partnership with the Scottish Council on Global Affairs. The SSD brings together partners from industry, academia, and politicians from across Scotland's political parties to inform and shape Scotland's domestic response to a more unpredictable and insecure world.
He can regularly be found on broadcast and print media, and his practice spans Scottish, UK, Irish, and European briefs, with a particular focus on defence, energy, cyber, and security policy.
